System History

Ground Improvement Systems, LLC (GIS) is the licensee of the EarthTec Reinforced Soil Wall technology. GIS specializes in the design, analysis, and supply of ground improvement systems. GIS designs and supplies Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining wall structures. GIS is located in Arlington, Texas.

Thomas P. Taylor, Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng, BC.GE., is President of GIS. Dr. Taylor has been involved with the design of MSE structures for over twenty-five years. He has been actively involved with the instrumentation of MSE structures, the testing of individual MSE components and the forensic investigations of distressed and failed structures. He has served as the Chairman for the Technical Committee for the Association of Metallically Stabilized Earth, is a certified NHI instructor, and is an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Dr. Taylor has twenty-five United States patents, and patents pending that are concerned with the methods of construction, and the related components, for Mechanically Stabilized Earth Structures. Dr. Taylor is registered as a Professional Engineer in several States and Canadian providences. Dr. Taylor has designed, analyzed, and supplied MSE retaining walls since January 1995. Since this time Dr. Taylor has been responsible for the construction of hundreds of MSE structures, and millions of square feet in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Australia, and Mexico. A large portion of the GIS system components are manufactured by outside material suppliers to the specified dimensions, tolerances, specifications, and Quality Control provided by GIS. The material suppliers provide GIS with a notarized documentation verifying that all material was manufactured in accordance with project specifications, within the given tolerances and within applicable ASTM requirements. A representative of GIS executes a final check of quality.

A qualified Technical Adviser (TA) aids the contractor in beginning of the installation of all GIS Reinforced Soil Wall systems. All GIS TA’s are experienced and trained in all phases of Mechanically Stabilized Earth construction. TA is provided to the contractor at the beginning of each project as well as periodic on-site monitoring.
