Oldsmar BMX Retaining Wall Replacement

In 2015, the Oldsmar BMX track was reconstructed using a combination of earthen embankments and mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls (MSEWs) for the two start hills and the VIP viewing area. After construction the MSEWs exhibited distress that included cracks in the masonry facing units, separation of the masonry facing units, distortion of the wall face, and loss of aggregate from behind the MSEWs. In April 2019, the track was closed to the public due to life safety concerns.

Rather than repair the MSEWs, the City of Oldsmar elected to completely demolish and replace the start hills and VIP Viewing Area using the Design-Build delivery method. GIS in combination with the Design-Build design team elected to use an MSE with a segmental concrete panel totaling 12,500 square feet.

The MSE walls were designed a series of independent structures. The independent MSE walls support an 8-Meter hill, 5-Meter hill, VIP viewing area and Access ramps. The maximum wall height was 37.5 feet. The 8-Meter hill is a back-to-back MSE where the soil reinforcement overlaps. The access ramp in front of the VIP viewing area is designed as an MSE that adjacent to a stable structure. The back-to-back and stable structure design concept alleviates external stability concerns by limiting the horizontal earth pressure.
